Hello and Welcome to Market Fantasy!
Below you will find the updated consistency rankings through week 14. The ranks are based on a combination of player weekly scoring average and the standard deviation of the scores. They’re not meant to be regular season ranks, but more of a predictive tool. The aim is to identify players who score the most points week to week on the most consistent basis. A full description of how the ranks are calculated can be found here. As always, the players are listed with the relevant information so you can do your own research and work with the info how you like.
Week 14 is in the books and so are many playoff games. Congrats to all those with something to play for still! The past week in football brought us some big performances, but most of those largely came from established names who you would expect to put up big games for you in the playoffs. There were a few notable exceptions, of course. A couple performances came from guys who were not established names in the beginning of the season, but by now should never leave your lineup like Nick Foles and Josh Gordon.
I want to stress that now is not the time to get too cute with your lineup. Like I said earlier, a lot of the week’s big performances came from guys you would expect to put them up. You can see what a lot of one week wonders have done after their breakout here, and a lot of the time it isn’t good. The players highlighted today are guys who are starting to put something together the last few weeks and are good targets for bench depth or even in keeper/dynasty formats where you can keep free agents.
Scroll though, let me know what you think and best of luck to those still playing for something! Thanks for reading!
QB:
Ryan Tannehill – Tannehill has been solid if unspectacular this season. What he does provide you is consistency. Remember, reading the ranks and taking into account the standard distribution, we can predict with 68% certainty that Tannehill will give us between 15 – and 24 points. And honestly, it’s the floor you’re concerned about with a replacement player. This week, Tannehill gets to take on a Patriots team that just made a 300 yard passer of Jason Campbell. You could do a lot worse if you’re desperate.
Matt Ryan – Ryan has probably been dropped in a large amount of leagues, and I would pick him up if I could. He’s shown some signs of life lately and this week he gets to take on the disaster that is the Washington Redskins. The Skins simply can’t play defense. Unless it gets out of hand real quick, Ryan could be in line to produce decent stats this week.
RB:
Bobby Rainey – I told you not to give up on Rainey last week after a couple tough matchups, and he responded last week with a big game against the Bills. This week’s opponent is a tough 49ers team that is tough on the run, but give Rainey a look if he’s out there. He’ll only be a flex play this week, but this move is also a little defensive, too. You don’t want the guy you’re playing picking Rainey up and then turning him loose on you.
Toby Gerhart – I was going to put Marcel Reece here after his big game filling in for Rashad Jennings, but it’s looking like Jennings will be good to go in week 15. The super obvious name here is Toby Gerhart. Adrian Peterson went down with a foot injury and was clearly in pain. Don’t pay any attention to AP saying he was close to returning to the game. While an MRI has shown nothing is broken or torn, he’s still unlikely to play this week, and with the way the Vikings season is going, could be shut down for the year to be safe. Gerhart has been ok when called on to fill in, and he is the clear cut starter here as long as he isn’t hurt.
Daniel Thomas – Thomas was all but ruled out for the rest of the season last week, so of course he was able to suit up, fill in for an injured Lamar Miller and put up 139 yards and a score. Despite missing two games and being the “backup,” Thomas has managed only 9 points less than Lamar Miller. If Miller is forced to miss more time, Thomas has a nice matchup this week against the New England Patriots. He could be a nice flex either way, and could be a RB2 if he has the gig all to himself this week.
WR:
Justin Hunter – Hunter has now put up two monster games in the last three weeks, topping 100 yards in each. While the middle game was a dud, he is starting to deserve our attention. He is in the popular mold of big and fast receivers who has some big time upside to him. He probably won’t start for you this year, but needs to be owned in all keeper and especially dynasty formats. As good as Kendall Wright has been, he simply doesn’t have the physical gifts Hunter does.
Cordarrelle Patterson – Patterson is another big and fast guy like Hunter. Unlike Hunter, however, he could become a flex play for those in a pinch. He’s scored on long touchdowns in two of the last three weeks, and on both plays, once he got in the open field, the defense had absolutely no chance. This year, he’ll be the definition of boom and bust, but next year, if he can improve his technique, he could be a beast in waiting. Think Josh Gordon or Alshon Jeffery.
Julian Edelman – Of the three mentioned today, Edelman is the closest to being a WR2 for your team. With Gronk out for the year, Edelman is the top target for the Patriots passing game, or at least 1A with Shane Vereen. Last week, Edelman caught a touchdown and a clutch two point conversion, showing that Tom Brady isn’t afraid to use him in the red zone. He should put up at least flex value and could be a low end WR2 based on volume alone.
TE:
Charles Clay – If you just lost Gronkowski, Clay could be your guy. Clay has been a focal point of the Dolphins passing attack lately, with 10 targets this past week resulting in 97 yards and two touchdowns. This was the second game in a row with 10 targets for Clay and this week he gets to face a Patriots team that gave us the Jordan Cameron revival last week. Should be a top 10 TE play this week and lessen the blow of losing Gronk.
Garrett Graham – Graham is a lesser Choice to replace Gronk, but nonetheless, is getting opportunity with Owen Daniels sidelined. Graham has 46 targets in the last four games, resulting in a couple good games, and a couple bad. This inconsistency will make him tough to predict, but this week, he gets to face a Colts defense that allowed a touchdown to Bengals TE Jermaine Gresham. He should continue to get his volume and can be a decent play for desperate owners.
That’s all for now, check out the consistency ratings below! Thanks for reading!
