Hello and Welcome to Market Fantasy!
With the trade deadline quickly approaching us in most leagues, I wanted to take a quick look at players who are on the upswing and could be potential steals for the fantasy stretch run and playoffs. To do that, we’re taking a look at how players started off compared to how they have performed the last few weeks. We see it every year where someone starts hot only to fizzle when you need them most. There are also the guys who come completely out of nowhere to finish the season strong and win a lot of leagues for a lot of owners. In between are the guys who are consistent and basically give you a point total you can bank on every week. Not to say it’s a great point total, but consistency is a very underrated thing in our game. The point of today’s exercise is to provide some names that you might not realize are on the upswing and some names that are on the downswing. Try to trade a guy that is slipping for someone that is rising. Remember names should mean nothing to you at this point. It’s all about the numbers. Points win leagues, not jerseys.
To do this, I took the average score for the first seven weeks of the season and compared them to the average score for the last three weeks (8 – 10). I then calculated the percent change between the two. The risers are the guys with a more than 25% gain, the fallers with a more than 25% loss, and the hold steady’s are the guys with less than 10% change either way. As with everything, the bottom line number isn’t everything. For example, you’ll see DeMarco Murray has slipped 31.5% from his hot start. Does that mean he’s a panic sell? Of course not. He’s still averaging 16 points per game over the last three. HOWEVER, if someone still wants to pay through the nose for him, like a top 10 RB and WR? That’s something I’d seriously consider. Remember, Take into account all three numbers seen here. Also consult my consistency and efficiency ranks (those will be up by Saturday). Happy hunting!
One quick note: you won’t see players who have just come on in the last week or two after not playing the first seven. If they averaged 0 for any of the time periods, then their % change would be infinite. So you won’t see a Mark Sanchez or a Bryce Brown Unfortunately. Sorry if that causes anyone to miss someone.
